Milestone of India - Tuticorin Port handles 228.1 lakh tonnes. (Tamilnadu - India.)

Tuticorin: Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT), has achieved a handling capacity of 228.1 lakh tonnes, recently. The TPT is enhancing its infrastructure facilities in every plan period, according to A. Subbiah, Chairman (in-charge) of the Trust.

Due to the port management's proactive policy towards improvement of traffic, more developments were being made for carrying out anchorage operations every year. Since now, the Port had handled 17 lakh tonnes of cargo from 176 vessels at anchorage. In a statement issued here , Mr. Subbiah expressed hope of handling higher capacities in future.

Adequate measures were being taken to augment facilities to enhance the port's handling capacity by implementing schemes like Inner Harbour Development and Outer Harbour Development programme. However, considering the necessity for promoting traffic, the TPT had executed anchorage operation from August 2007, to facilitate traffic of higher draft vessels. Moreover, a number of concessional schemes had been extended by the Port Trust Board.

In the wake of sustainable developments, a number of vessels with cargoes like industrial coal, dunpeas, thermal coal, raw sugar, gypsum, copper concentrate, coke, rock phosphate and other fertilizer raw materials had been handled without any accident.

During 2008-09, about 5.82 lakh tonnes; 2009-10 about 6.26 lakh tonnes and in the current fiscal until July 2010, about 2.57 lakh tonnes had been handled.

the TPT had created an integrated coal storage yard of about 25 hectares with adequate facilities for wagon loading. Apart from this, a wind barrier had been erected at a cost of Rs.3 crore and a sprinkler system had been put in place at a cost of Rs.2.18 crore to minimize environmental pollution, he added.
