Tirunelveli/Tuticorin: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with traditional gaiety and fervour.
The beginning of the festival marks the end of month-long fasting. Thousands of Muslims assembled in mosques and idgahs in both districts early morning on Friday and offered prayers to the almighty Allah.
Thousands of Muslims, including women, gathered at Melapalayam Idgah grounds in Tirunelveli and offered special prayers. Samsullah led the prayers on behalf of Tamil Nadu Towheedh Jamaath. Minister for Environment, Sports and Youth Welfare T.P.M. Maidheen Khan also offered prayers at Sunnath Jamath in Jinnah Thidal of Melapalayam. Prayers also held at various Mosques in Rahmath Nagar, Pettai and Palayamkottai.
Marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan, the worshippers, who were clad in new clothes, broke the fast and offered special prayers at several places in Tuticorin . Imam Abdul Aalim led the prayer. Meeran, president, Jamia Mosque, WGC Road, and Abdul Kadar, secretary offered special prayers at the Idgah grounds on the Tuticorin-Palayamkottai Road. After prayers, all worshippers including little boys embraced each other at the prayer ground and exchanged greetings. Similarly, the bretheren of Thowheed Jamath offered prayers at Nehru Park in Tuticorin which was led by Imam Ansari.
A large number of worshippers also congregated at the shore of Kayalpatnam beach and offered prayers to mark the occasion. Preparations for celebrations were in full swing after the moon was cited on Thursday evening. The shopping malls in Bazaar and markets witnessed huge crowds and hectic commercial activities.
