Milestone of India - ‘Dhwaja Sthambham' work begins at Srikalahasti. (Andhrapradesh - India.)

TIRUPATI: The famous Shiva temple at Srikalahasti would soon have a new ‘Dhwaja Sthambham' (flag post) replacing the ancient one which now stands bang opposite the main deity in the sanctum sanctorum. According to temple sources, a 62-ft long huge teak log which was specially procured for the purpose from the thick Bhadrachalam jungles by the temple authorities with government approval would be used for the holy task. The timber measures 77 inches round its girth. Work to chisel out the massive post was formally launched on Monday amid a religious fervour with its Chennai-based ‘Sthapathi', Kalyanasundaram, starting to chip the wood at the auspicious time to signal the start of the task.

A team of expert crafts persons would work on the timber for the next few months at a make-shift work-shop to get the massive pole ready for erection and consecration at an auspicious moment to be fixed by the pundits later.

Mark of obeisance

Sources said that the whole work, right from the procurement of the wood and up to its erection is being sponsored by the ‘Reddy Brothers' of the Karnataka State cabinet as a mark of their obeisance to the famed Shiva temple which is also known as the Benares of South (Dakshina Kashi).
