MANGALORE, Krishna Janmashtami was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour in Dakshina Kannada on Monday.
People thronged various temples right from the morning and offered special pujas. Many of the families left for Udupi to watch the Janmashtami pujas at the Krishna Temple.
The pujas were performed by the Paryaya Swamiji of Admaar Math, Vishwapriya Tirtha.
Customary bath
The morning began with the cleaning of the house and drawing rangoli in the front of the house. It is customary in the houses of Dakshina Kannada to give a bath to Lord Krishna's idol before installing it in a special place decorated with flowers, sandalwood paste and Tulasi Kudi.
`Nandadeepa'
Since most of the houses do pujas at midnight, ``Nandadeepa'' is kept in front of the idol. Special offerings of "Naivedyam'', including "ashtami ladu'', ``chaklis'', ``mosaru avalakki'', ``panchakajjaya'', and five varieties of dry fruits and honey are offered to the infant Krishna during the midnight pujas.
Festive look
The market wore a festive look with flowers of all varieties, mainly chrysanthemums, jasmine, jaji, kanakambara, and even an odd bunch of lotus, which are offered to Lord Krishna in the homes of Dakshina Kannada. The ginger plant is yet another must during Janmashtami celebrations.
Come Janmashtami and the ``Huli Veshas'' appear in every part of the city. It is estimated that about 20,000 "Huli Veshadharis" will move around Mangalore city and other smaller towns such as Puttur, Ullal, Buntwal, Sullia, Moodbidri, Suratkal, Kadaba and Mulki and other villages and hobli level towns during the festivities.
