HYDERABAD: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) conducted mass marriage of 79 couples here on Saturday on the auspicious occasion of ‘sravana', the birth star of Lord Venkateswara.
The programme was specially held for couples from Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district alone to symbolise the importance of the occasion which also marked the advent of ‘sravanamasam'.
It would be organised in a big way throughout the State in December.
Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, who participated in the event at Lalita Kala Toranam, advised the couples to follow the small family norm.
He said that there was no chance to bless the couples to have big families as in the past.
He also said that marriages conducted under the aegis of TTD did not develop cracks as they had divine blessings of the Lord.
The Hindu Dharma Prachara Parishad secretary Rallabandi Kavitha Prasad,
who anchored the programme, said the TTD had spent Rs. 26.24 crore to perform
the marriage of 34,000 couples in five rounds earlier.
A sum of Rs. 7,700 was spent on each couple.
Idols of Lord Venkateswara and his consort Padmavathi which were brought from Tirumala were placed on a pedestal facing the couples who were made to squat on the dais.
A sacred fire was lit and pooja performed to the idols. The couples tied the nuptial knot after a mangalasutram was presented to Goddess Padmavathi.
