Milestone of India - Yeddyurappa's pet project wins award . (Karnataka - India.)

SHIMOGA: Jana Shikshana Samsthan (JSS), a Centrally-sponsored voluntary organisation, has reason to celebrate its decennial year in a memorable way as it has won the prestigious NLMA-UNESCO Award-2010 in appreciation of its “outstanding achievements in the field of skill development.”

The award, instituted by the National Literacy Mission, consists of a trophy and a citation. JSS Director S.Y. Arunadevi will receive the award at a function on the International Literacy Day in Hyderabad on September 8.

Mr. Yeddyurappa floated the JSS in 2000 to create jobs for the unemployed youth. His dream came true when the Swami Vivekananda Vidya Samsthe of Shikaripur, his home town, sponsored the JSS with the active support of the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. He spearheaded its activities in the initial period as its founder-president. Ms. Arunadevi, who is the daughter of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, told The Hindu here on Saturday that the recognition was given after subjecting the JSS's activities to strict scrutiny. JSS is engaged in a wide range of activities, including skill development, promotion of adult literacy and environmental education, by holding regular vocational guidance and training courses. Ms. Arunadevi said that the JSS would organise a conference of its beneficiaries to felicitate Mr. Yeddyurappa.

She said that with the opening of the JSS in Gulbarga, the total number of units has risen to eight in the State.
