Milestone of india - Immersion Journey for Lord Ganesh. (Maharashtra - India.)

MUMBAI: Ganesh immersion ceremonies got off to a peaceful start on Wednesday with the Mumbai Police, Indian Navy and the Coast Guard providing aerial, sea and land security cover and hundreds of thousands of people gathering for the mega-religious event, officials said.

Coast Guard choppers hovered over the city keeping strict vigil while naval patrol boats and divers were positioned at strategic locations, including the main venue Girgaum Chowpatty, an official said.

One of the largest ones, the Ganesh Gully's idol of Lord Ganesh, began its slow journey to Girgaum Chowpatty for the final immersion, around five kilometres away.

Ganeshotsav is celebrated in a big way in Thane and entire Konkan region, comprising Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, besides Pune.

As per last year's estimates, around 150,000 big and small Ganesh idols shall be taken out in processions from individual homes and major Ganesh mandals, attracting over six million people, including domestic and foreign tourists.

The Ganesh idols, varying from gigantic ones measuring several metres tall to tiny, hand-held ones, shall be taken for immersion into the Arabian Sea at various locations, creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs and artificially-created immersion sites dotting the city and suburbs.

Besides Girgaum Chowpatty, the other prominent immersion sites include Dadar Chowpatty, Juhu Beach, Versova Beach, Marve Beach, Manori Beach, Madh Island, Gorai beach, the Mithi River and its branches, Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

As many as 27 sites are located along the seashore, posing a challenge to the authorities to maintain security as well as safety of the Ganesh revellers and devotees who would throng the immersion venues all day.

Mumbai Police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have made elaborate on-site security arrangements at all the immersion sites.

Elaborate traffic arrangements have also been made with suitable diversions and one way routes to ensure that processions of Ganesh idols are not hampered or delayed as they wend their way to various immersion sites.

MAY LORD GANESHA ALONG WITH HIS BROTHER
LORD MURUGA AND HIS CONCERTS VALLI AND DEIVAYANI
AND ALSO HIS FATHER LORD SHIVA AND MOTHER PARVATHI
BLESS THIS ENTIRE UNIVERSE.

Milestone of India - Milestone in FII investment cap.

NEW DELHI: Aimed at bridging the financing gap in infrastructure business and ensuring India's growing attractiveness as an investment destination, the government on Thursday raised the cap on investment by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in the country's debt and bond markets by $10 billion to $30 billion.

According to an official statement here, FIIs will now be allowed to invest up to $5 billion more in both government bonds and corporate papers after they reach the existing cap of $5 billion and $15 billion in the two instruments, respectively. Besides, FIIs are permitted to invest $5 billion in bonds of infrastructure companies and government bonds with a residual maturity of over five years.

“The government has increased the current limit of FII investment in government securities by $5 billion, raising the cap to $10 billion and the incremental limit of $5 billion be invested in securities with residual maturity of over five years,” the statement said.

“The current limit of FII investment in corporate bonds has also been increased by $5 billion, raising the cap to $20 billion and the incremental limit of $5 billion be invested in corporate bonds with residual maturity of over five years issued by companies in infrastructure sector,” it said.

The government is of the view that enhancement of the FII investment cap would provide avenues for increased investments in debt securities, help investment in the infrastructure sector and the development of government securities and corporate bond markets in the country.“The policy has been reviewed in the context of India's evolving macroeconomic situation, its increasing attractiveness as an investment destination and need for additional financial resources for India's infrastructure sector while balancing its monetary policy, the statement said.

Investment destination

Having emerged as one of the top investment destinations in the course of the fast-paced recovery from the impact of the global financial crisis, India has already attracted over $17 billion in investment in various bonds and securities. A hike in the ceiling was, therefore, deemed necessary as FIIs are already close to touching the existing cap of $20 billion in investment. Commenting on the relaxation in the investment limit, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee viewed that the move would help augment the flow of FII funds into the country's debt markets. “This is a welcome announcement and I do hope that the handicap which FIIs are facing will be removed considerably and there will be more of a flow to the capital markets, he said.

Milestone of India - Milestone in PSU IOC's Petrochem Business.

NEW DELHI: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) on Wednesday announced that its turnover from the petrochemical business was expected to more than double to Rs.15,000 crore next fiscal.
Addressing a press conference here to announce the launch of the ‘Propel'' brand of petrochemical products here, IOC Chairman B. M. Bansal said the company clocked a turnover of Rs.3,000 crore from the petrochemical business in 2009-10 and this year it was expected to rise to Rs.6,000 crore.

“Next fiscal, we hope to run our naphtha cracker plant at Panipat full stream that will see our turnover rising to Rs.15,000 crore,'' he remarked.

Mr. Bansal said IOC was hoping to capture 20 per cent market share of the petrochemical business in India from the current 5 per cent. “Every segment that we operate in, whether it is lubricants, automotive fuels, LPG or aviation we have established ourselves as leaders. ‘Propel' will be the latest in the bouquet of our brand offerings and is backed by the same intensity of passion that helped us capture the hearts and minds of our customers,'' he said.

Further, he said IOC had earmarked Rs.30,000-crore investments during 2007-12 for setting up world-class plants and nationwide marketing infrastructure.

“These plants have been designed to use product streams from IOC's own refineries, to produce a wide range of value-added petrochemical products and intermediates for segments as diverse as detergents, polyesters and polymers/plastic,'' he added.

He said IOC had also laid out a web-based marketing strategy, showcasing its capability to manufacture and market the full range of petrochemicals.

IOC is setting up a petrochemicals complex at its upcoming grassroots refinery at Paradip in Orissa.

To be commissioned by 2011-12, the 15-million tonnes per annum refinery will have facilities for production of front-end petrochemicals, including paraxylene, polypropylene and styrene.
A state-of-the-art 1.20 lakh tonnes per annum styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) unit, the first in India, is under way at Panipat as a joint venture with TSRC Corporation of Taiwan and Marubeni Corporation of Japan to further strengthen IOC's presence in specialty petrochemicals.

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday launched mobile-based trading through its 33 leading brokers.

“We have started providing user-friendly mobile-based trading from Tuesday. The top 33 brokers of BSE commenced mobile trading for their clients,” BSE's Managing Director and CEO Madhu Kannan told reporters here.

Leading brokers

Leading BSE stock brokers, namely, Angel Broking, Motilal Oswal Securities, Marwadi Shares & Finance, BCB Brokerage, Asika Stock Broking, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services, SMC Global Securities, ICICI Securities, India Infoline, Kotak Securities, Standard Chartered STCI Capital Markets were among those who started providing the mobile-based trading facility to their clients.

The mobile trading service will be extended to all the investors through its 900 active brokers soon.

Mobile trading is essentially an extension of Internet-based trading.

Mr. Kannan said the security on mobile trading would be the same as on Internet trading.

Full control

Brokers would have full control of the risk parameters since orders submitted by clients on their mobile will be sent via the brokers' servers to the exchange.

With mobile-based trading, the BSE plans to expand its reach to rural areas.

“With the introduction of mobile trading, brokers who were providing broking services in cities and urban areas can now provide broking services in rural areas,” BSE Deputy Chief Executive Officer Ashishkumar Chauhan said.

Mr. Chauhan pointed out that mobile trading would be successful as the country has 65 crore mobile users as against only one crore Internet users.

On August 27, the Securities and Exchange Board of India gave its go-ahead for the launch of mobile trading.

The regulator had specified that brokers who provided the Internet-based trading facility would be eligible to provide the mobile trading facility as well. — PTI

Milestone of India - Sensex hits 20000-mark.

MUMBAI: Upbeat foreign investors on Tuesday pushed the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, above the 20000-mark for the first time in 32 months, as they bet on companies that are driving the India growth story.

The barometer closed 95.45 points up at 20001.55, its best closing since January 15, 2008, when the index ended at 20251.09.

Similarly, the 50-share National Stock Exchange benchmark index Nifty breached the psychological 6000-mark and ended at 6009.05, up 28.60 points.

Some brokers, however, feel that a short-term correction may be round the corner, but would nonetheless provide good investment opportunities.

Happy with the market milestone, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters in New Delhi that “We all know that the Sensex is always a little bit unpredictable. (But) I am happy that for the first time after January 2008, it has crossed 20000.”

Analysts said the rally in Indian market was propelled by strong inflows from overseas fund houses, which have made a net investment of over Rs.71,000 crore in domestic stocks so far this year.

“Sensex gushing past the 20000-mark stands testimony to the attractiveness of India as a preferred investment destination,” Angel Broking CMD Dinesh Thakkar said.
Tuesday's close marked the third straight session of gains. Significantly, the Sensex has completed its journey from 17971 on August 31 to 20000 in just 15 trading days.

The gain was fuelled by a smart gain in blue chips like L&T, HDFC, HDFC Bank, TCS, Infosys and BHEL.

Infosys improved by 0.9 per cent to Rs.3,058.50, TCS by 2.5 per cent to Rs.952.75 and Wipro by 2.7 per cent to Rs.435.10.

L&T rose by 2 per cent to Rs.2,034.75, Cipla by 1.92 per cent to Rs.320.75 and BHEL by 1.73 per cent to Rs.2,478.95.

Reliance Industries acted as a drag, closing 0.60 per cent lower at Rs.1,033.50.

Asian stocks rose after U.S. homebuilder Lennar Corp posted better-than-estimated profit, boosting optimism in the economic recovery worldwide.

Rupee edges up

The rupee on Tuesday gained three paise to close at a four-month high against the U.S. currency amid sustained capital inflows, completing five-session of gaining string.

In fairly active trading at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee closed three paise higher at 45.67/68, the level not seen since May 18, 2010, when it had closed at 45.59/60. It ended at 45.70/71 on Monday. — PTI

Milestone of India - U.S. report says India third most powerful nation.

Washington: A new official United States report has listed India as the third most powerful nation in the world after the U.S. and China and the fourth most powerful bloc.

“The new global power line-up for 2010 also predicted that New Delhi's clout in the world will further rise by 2025,” as per ‘Global Governance 2025,' jointly issued by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) of the U.S. and the European Union's Institute for Security Studies (EUISS).

The report — quoting the views of a host of experts from Brazil, Russia, India and China and depicting fictionalised scenarios — points to what could happen over the next 25 years in terms of global governance.

U.S. on top of list

The U.S. tops the list of powerful countries/regions in 2010, accounting for nearly 22 per cent of the global power. China is second, along with European Union at 16 per cent and India is placed third at eight per cent. Japan, Russia and Brazil follow India with less than five per cent each.

According to the International Futures model, the power of the U.S., the E.U., Japan and Russia will decline by 2025, while that of China, India and Brazil will increase, even though there will be no change in this listing.

The U.S. will still remain the most powerful country in 2025, but it will have a little over 18 per cent of the global power. China will closely follow the U.S. with 16 per cent, EU with 14 per cent and India with 10 per cent. — ANI

Milestone of India - United Stock Exchange begins operations.

MUMBAI: New bourse for currency derivatives, the United Stock Exchange of India (USE), began operations on Monday and witnessed good volumes in the first hour of trade.

After the NSE and MCX, the USE is the third bourse offering currency trading in the country. “We are witnessing good volumes and it (volumes) has already crossed Rs.2,000 crore in the first hour of trading,” USE Director Gaurav Arora told reporters after the launch.

The exchange commenced operations in the all four currency pairs allowed by SEBI — dollar-rupee, euro-rupee, yen-rupee and pound-rupee.

Worldwide, the currency derivatives market was bigger than equities with volumes of $3-billion-a-day while India's contribution is only one per cent. Hence, there was a greater prospect for growth, USE CEO T. S. Narayansami said.

Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Shyamala Gopinath, who, along with SEBI Chairman C. B. Bhave, inaugurated the bourse, said investors should start looking at currency trading as a new asset class.

The RBI and SEBI came out strongly in support of having a diversified ownership in exchanges for ensuring good governance of the “systemically important institutions.”

“A diversified ownership is very necessary in a market infrastructure company. Ultimately, exchanges are public utilities. (It) is a means of good governance,” Ms. Gopinath said at the inauguration of the USE here. Endorsing her views, SEBI Chief said, “I am happy that USE is coming with a diversified ownership...we need to see that they serve the purpose that they are supposed to serve.”

Public-private partnership

USE is a unique public-private partnership with 21 public sector banks, five top private banks, the BSE, trading companies like the state-owned trading entity MMTC, Jaypee Capital, gold importer Riddhi Siddhi and a leading garment exporter as stakeholders. — PTI

Milestone of India - Indian signs Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.

NEW DELHI: India on Monday signed two important agreements for the ambitious Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project. The project, assisted by Asian Development Bank, envisages the building of 1,680 km of pipeline with a total gas capacity of 90 million cubic metres per day (mmscmd). With the completion of the TAPI gas pipeline, India would get 38 mmscmd of gas.

The agreements were signed at the steering committee meeting (SCM) of the TAPI gas pipeline project, held at Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat and attended by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada, Turkmenistan's Deputy Prime Minister Baymyrat Hojamuhammedov, Turkmenistan's Minister of Oil and Gas B. Nedirov, Afghanistan's Minister of Mining Industry Wahidullah Shahrani, and Pakistan's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources Naveed Qamar.

India, which joined this project in April 2008, signed two important documents — one initialising the gas pipeline framework agreement (GPFA), the other being the Heads of Agreement for the proposed gas sales purchase agreement (GSPA) — along with three other partner countries.

While outlining the significance of this project in fulfilling the energy needs of India, Mr. Prasada said the Cabinet has already given in-principle approval to the GPFA, however the final signing would be done only after the Cabinet approved this document.

“To make this project successful, all stakeholders should recognise that the transit fee for the gas through various countries must be kept at a minimum. Similarly, security issues must be properly addressed and there should be complete clarity on the institutional mechanisms for this,” he said.

Mr. Prasada added that before taking this project further, the pricing and other GSPA issues should be resolved to the full satisfaction of all partner countries. The length of pipeline from Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan up to the Indian border is 145 km, 735 km and 800 km respectively.

Milestone of India - Miestone in Indian Economy.

The Indian economy is entering a new phase of development as the prospects for balanced growth in 2010-11 have given rise to expectations that the performance in the next and subsequent years will be even more heartening. As a result of the bountiful rainfall in many regions in North India and even in the areas such as Bihar and Eastern States where it was apprehended for a time that severe drought condition would prevail, the yield of food and cash crops in the kharif season may constitute an all-time record.
Crop yields

The outlook for the rabi season too is promising as storage in the major reservoirs is very comfortable. It is thus estimated that the output of the agricultural sector will increase by 4 per cent in the current season against 0.2per cent comparably. It is even emphasised by agricultural experts that there has been a tripling of investment in the agricultural sector in recent years and that modern techniques also are being adopted. These measures have been responsible for a significant improvement in productivity. There is thus the confidence that even 5 per cent growth is feasible if only the monsoon does not prove to be much below normal.

Assuming that there is no drag in GDP growth by the agricultural sector, the increase in GDP in 2010-11 is estimated to be even 8.75 per cent with rising industrial output. Details for July are impressive as the output has risen by 13.8 per cent and the average for April-July is 11.40 per cent. The Union Finance Minister has suggested that the average growth may be 12-13 per cent in the whole of 2010-11. The trends in foreign trade in April-August too have been flattering and it is now hoped that export earnings may exceed $ 200 billion in a whole year.

Industrial sector

The producers of capital goods, consumer durables and even textiles have been faring well while the increase in the production of coal and power is restricted only by the non-availability of the requisite capacity. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has therefore emphasised the importance of removing the deficiency in power, coal, capital goods, transport and other sectors. The need of the hour is to ensure availability of the requisite financial resources in forex and rupee terms as there is no dearth of viable projects. In this context the policy of the monetary authorities to adopt a dearer money approach may well prove to be counter-productive and result in an undue increase in the cost of credit and chocking up demand which can be avoided.

All the major industries are in a position to market a rising level of production remuneratively. It is needless to emphasise that this growth process in evidence latterly should not get unduly discouraged.

The UPA Government has actually two major challenges which have to be imaginatively tackled. The postulated increase in the yield of foodgrains to 238-240 million tonne may well compel intensification of procurement operations in rice from October and in wheat from April next year. All going well the aggregate quantity of fine cereals procured may easily be 65 million tonne or more. With the off take through fair price shops and other various welfare programme being not more than 55 million tonnes, the additions to buffer stock may prove to be highly uncomfortable at 75 million tonnes by July next year. How should this huge quantity will be stored in good condition and what is the strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture for tackling this embarrassing situation? Even for maintaining buffer stocks for 65 million tonne the requisite capacity is not available. There is a huge controversy over the storing of sizable quantum of fine cereals which are deteriorating in quality causing heavy losses to the Exchequer. It remains to be seen how this formidable challenge will be overcome.

Food inflation

Food inflation may not be as worrisome as it is now because of the reports of an increase in the area and yield of different types of pulses and coarse cereals. The output of oil seeds too may be distinctly higher than in 2009-10. As overseas reports also suggest that there is distinct softening of prices, food inflation can thus be effectively tackled though the WPI index based on 2004-05 has risen to 15.10 per cent for the week ended September 4 against 11.47 per cent in the previous week under the earlier base. The link factor may well explain how exactly the variation has taken place. It can be anticipated in any event that prices for primary products will tend to decline with an improvement in the supply situation to some extent though the constraints may not be fully removed. Against this background it is necessary to remember that food inflation can be effectively controlled only with the removal of supply constraints and monetary measures alone may not yield the desired results.
As there is the prospect of food inflation getting under control due to natural factors the decision of the monetary authorities to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6 per cent and by 50 basis points in the reverse repo rate to 5 per cent with immediate effect may result in higher deposit and lending rates and create problems for those executing mammoth projects with loaned funds constituting a fairly good proportion of total outlay.

Money becoming dearer

Many banks have already raised their deposit and lending rates as the pool of resources has to be considerably augmented. The demand for funds has off course remained unsatisfied and the executives of major banks may not experience any difficulty in utilising available resources effectively. The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India has understandably refrained from raising the cash reserve ratio (CRR). A squeeze is already emerging in the money market and many financial institutions may not be in a position to provide the requisite resources fully for the constituents.

The absence of liquidity in the banking system will be evident from the fact that the growth in deposits of scheduled commercial banks in the 12 months ended August 27 was distinctly slower at Rs.5,89,527 crore against Rs.6,93,875 crore in the same period in the previous year. On the other hand fresh bank credit has soared to Rs.5,44,655 crore from Rs.3,45,987 crore while fresh investments accounted for only Rs.1,10,126 crore (Rs.3,50,196 crore). The situation can ease only if forex inflows turn out to be encouraging in the coming months. The RBI may have to provide ample refinance facilities and even lower the CRR if it becomes necessary.

The reaction in the bourses to the latest developments was not initially quite favourable though there has been subsequently a significant recovery. The central exchequer has to complete its borrowing programme albeit on a restricted basis and make a success also of the disinvestment programme. Others engaged in the implementation of infrastructure projects have also to raise huge resources through tax free bonds.

The Union Finance Ministry is in a comfortable position as tax collections have been brisk and the receipts from indirect taxes particularly in April-August have risen by 46 per cent to Rs.1,24,170 crore (Rs.85,097 crore). The Budget Estimates for 2010-11 have assumed that collection from indirect taxes will increase by 29 per cent over the revised estimates for 2009-10. Even if indirect tax collections increased by 40 per cent in a whole year the surplus over the estimate may well be Rs.28,000 to Rs.30,000 crore. As receipts from direct taxes also will be higher than the Budget Estimates and non-tax revenues will be noticeably higher than the Budget Estimates the borrowing through market loans can be reduced suitably to relieve strain on the money market. In that event, the fiscal deficit may be much lower than the visualised 5.5 per cent.

The bourses should remain buoyant with larger inflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and others. The BSE Index has been rising in a pronounced manner latterly and it was felt in knowledgeable circles that the high levels reached in January 2008 may even be surpassed. The happenings in the coming months will thus be significant though it remains to be seen to what extent there will be an increase in non debt and debt forex inflows. The buoyancy in the bourses can then be sustained and emerging squeeze in the money market will not be allowed to have a throttling effect.

The bullish sentiment was aided by the revised Direct Tax Code Bill which may become effective after scrutiny by Parliament from April 2012. The income tax assessees will stand to benefit by the higher exemption limit and the elongation of the tax slabs. Dividends paid by corporate as well as long term capital gains will continue to be exempt from taxation while the undistributed profits tax and transaction tax will continue to be levied.

Milestone of India - Miestone in Brahmotsavam at Tirumala. (Andhrapradesh - India.)

TIRUMALA: The nine-day annual Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara concluded on a grand finale with ‘Chakrasnanam' on Sunday.

The Utsava deities and the idol were carried in a grand procession to the venue – Sri Varahaswamy temple situated on the north-west bank of ‘Pushkarini' (temple tank) in the wee hours followed by the ‘Snapana Thirumanjanam.'

Soon after completion of the religious formalities, the idol of Lord ‘Chakrathalwar' was ceremoniously immersed in the holy tank waters. Tens of thousands of devotees congregated on the steps of the temple tank hours in advance and waited patiently for the momentous ‘immersion'.
With the first Saturday of the Peratasi Masam, considered auspicious by Tamilians coinciding with the Brahmotsavams, several thousands of devotees stayed back atop the sacred hills to participate in the Chakrasnanam festival.
Later special rituals were conducted at the ‘Dwajasthambham' (flag post) situated inside the temple complex in connection with the ‘Dwaja Avarohanam' festival organized later in the night.
The nine-day annual Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara which concluded on Sunday fetched the TTD a record Rs.13.94 crore, an increase by Rs.1.87 crore compared to last year.
Briefing media persons here on Sunday, TTD Executive Officer I.Y.R. Krishna Rao said the revenue earned was higher (compared to last year) despite low pilgrim turnout.

Out of the total income the temple ‘Hundi' alone netted a staggering Rs.11.53 crore against Rs.10.77 crore last year. The rest was received through sale of darshan tickets and laddus. The lifting of ‘ration' in the issuance of the laddus -- a decision taken recently by the TTD to arrest black marketing of laddu prasadam -- triggered the sales to over a staggering 16.27 lakh laddus during the nine-day festival period.
Dwelling at length, Mr. Rao said while over 5.26 lakh devotees had darshan of the lord over 8.57 lakh pilgrim availed of the TTD's free meals scheme. The APSRTC on its part ferried over 3.78 lakh pilgrims to the temple town.

E.O. thanks all
Mr. Rao thanked all the employees of the organisation including the S.V.Bhakthi channel personnel for making the mega event a grand success.

He was also all praise for the district police administration, RTC authorities and the forest and fire department personnel for their untiring efforts in making the event incident-free.
He said all the religious formalities vis-à-vis procession of various ‘vahanams' were strictly followed according to guidelines laid down in the ‘agama sastras'.

The striking feature of the Brahmotsavams was that devotees were allowed till the ‘Kula Sekhara Alwar Padi' for darshan of the main deity.

The management on its part had identified certain ‘deficiencies' during the nine-day festival. However, required steps would be initiated to see that such incidents do not recur during the ensuing Navarathri Brahmotsavams of the Lord scheduled to commence from October 8, he said.

Milestone of India - Miestone in Brahmotsavam at Tirumala. (Andhrapradesh - India.)

TIRUPATI: APSRTC, which generally plays a major role in transporting pilgrims to Tirumala especially during the annual Brahmotsavams, has done it again.

With 25,000 trips, the public transporter has plied as many as 8 lakh passengers to Tirumala hills and back, till Friday. As the annual fete will come to a close by Sunday evening, the number is expected to touch 10 lakh. The RTC authorities had made elaborate arrangements ahead of the fete and introduced additional services from various places and identified new bus stops in the city. Garuda Seva is a major event when the ghat services alone touch a mind-boggling rate of a bus per minute, thanks to the heavy influx of devotees - both locals and from outside. For the D-Day, the corporation touched an unbelievable 3,900 trips for transporting 95,800 passengers, thus fetching Rs.26 lakh on the single day.

Milestone of India - Green Earth Day celebrated. (Andhrapradesh - India.)

KARIMNAGAR: Students of Ken Crest Global High School celebrated ‘Green Earth Day' on Saturday by planting hundreds of saplings on their school premises and surroundings to educate people about the importance of planting more trees for the future generation.

‘Green' theme

On the occasion, students and teachers wore green outfits and turned the school ‘green' by tying mango and banana leaves.

Students also drew a ‘green rangoli' propagating the importance of protecting trees.

The event began with a puja of Goddess Saraswati by the tiny tots of the school and planting of ‘tulasi' sapling by school director R. Prasad Rao along with chairman R. Gomathi Prasad.

Later, the students planted sapling and flowering plants on the campus to mark the occasion.

‘Tulasi' plant

Teachers explained to the students about the medicinal value of ‘tulasi' plant, which had ayurvedic properties to cure various ailments.

They also explained about the importance of tying mango and banana leaves during festivities. They said tying of mango leaves keeps the air fresh. The students designed a modern green tree explaining about the importance of planting saplings for the future generations.

They also put up placards urging people to save the ecology by planting more trees and avoid using plastics.

They also sang songs highlighting the importance of greenery and nature.

Milestone of India - Milestone in Indian Gravitational Astronomy Research.

NEW DELHI: Indian gravitational astronomy research got a major boost on September 14 with the approval of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) to fund a Rs.2-crore proposal for building a prototype gravitational wave (GW) detector.

This three-metre-long optical interferometer-based detector is the first step in the four-phase strategy recommended by a consortium of Indian gravitational astronomy researchers towards building a four-km class Indian Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (IndIGO) by the year 2020.

The building of the prototype, led by C.S. Unnikrishnan and G. Rajalakshmi of the TIFR, is expected to be completed in three years.

Direct detection of GWs, which Einstein's theory of gravitation predicts, has been a major challenge for physics, and at present there is only indirect evidence for their existence (see photo). Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime — somewhat like propagating ripples on the surface of a pond — caused by the acceleration of a gravitating body.

As these distortions of spacetime travel outward, they cause changes in the lengths of objects in their path, which are different in different directions with respect to the wave direction. The idea is to pick up these signatures with instruments on the Earth as the passing waves affect different parts of the apparatus differently.

But being a feeble interaction, these length changes on the Earth are extremely small — about a hundredth of a billionth of a billionth of a metre — and only phenomena involving highly massive objects can produce signatures that may be detectable on the Earth.

Instruments based on laser interferometry — with reflecting mirrors suspended in ultra high vacuum conditions and separated by large distances to increase the signal strength — promise to give the best sensitivity. But detecting GWs even from violent astrophysical systems has proved to be extremely difficult after decades of effort. However, with vast improvements in technology, current detectors have successfully attained design sensitivity close to the detection threshold.

There is a strong international effort under way to build a worldwide network of ground-based detectors capable of opening the field, as the existing network falls well short of all-sky coverage. One of the main objectives of the Gravitational Waves International Committee (GWIC) is to optimise global research in GW astronomy with a 30-year horizon.

The GWIC's first priority is to expand the network with appropriately chosen international baselines and orientations to maximise the detection capability. A recent report of the GWIC recognises the need for a detector in the Asia-Pacific region — Australia, Japan, and possibly India or China.

In June, the GWIC noted its appreciation of the long-standing GW research activity in India in theory and data analysis, and endorsed the multi-pronged strategy proposed by the consortium to initiate experimental work as well.

The IndIGO consortium comprises 26 scientists that include researchers drawn from nine leading Indian institutions, as well as Indian scientists who are actively engaged in the field at major gravitational astronomy research centres of the world such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) at Caltech, United States, and the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Potsdam, Germany.

The consortium, chaired by Bala Iyer of the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, had submitted its detailed proposal and a road map for IndIGO to the directors of institutions with possible interest in GW astronomy and to leaders of the Indian scientific community on December 4, 2009.

Another important step in this phased strategy that will be formalised very soon is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the IndIGO consortium and the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA).

The ACIGA, established in 1995, coordinates gravitational research in Australia and is a collaboration of five leading Australian universities. It operates a national research facility called the High Optical Power Facility (HOPF) at Gingin, located on a 50 sq.km. site about 80 km north of Perth.

One of the chief objectives of ACIGA is to build the Australian International Gravitational Observatory (AIGO) with an advanced GW detector at this site. It is already an active participant in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) and a partner in the Advanced LIGO project, which is constructing three four-km baseline laser interferometric GW detectors.

Recently, the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the U.S. approved the proposal to construct one of these LIGO detectors at the AIGO site if Australia can raise funds to the tune of $170 million to build the infrastructure (including vacuum systems), provide staff, and meet the operational costs over 10 years.

The ACIGA, in turn, seeks to form an international collaboration, including the U.S., Germany, the U.K., India, China, France and Italy.

The ACIGA-IndIGO MoU will enable Indian participation in the setting up of AIGO and associated research in advanced detector technology, which is expected to give Indian researchers experience in state-of-the-art optical, mechanical and quantum metrology techniques towards building IndIGO, a third generation GW detector.

The MoU will also link IndIGO with the international programme of ground-based GW detection through access to all data generated through the LSC. The MoU will remain in effect for three years subject to a mid-term review in December 2011 and the total amount of funding envisaged towards this collaboration is about Rs.125 crore, most of which is expected to be spent in fabrication of sub-systems and tests in India.

Milestone of India - PSU BHEL secures major orders.

NEW DELHI: Breaking the myth that the company was piggy bank ridding on the back of orders from public sector undertakings (PSUs), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) on Friday said it had secured 90 per cent of the Rs.59,037-crore orders from clients in the private sector.

Seeking to put the record straight, BHEL said that out of the total orders received by it during the year for power plant equipment with a cumulative generation capacity of 16,489 MW, orders received from private power utilities alone accounted for 14,689 MW.

The current order book of the company stands at Rs.1.44 lakh crore. The company recorded a jump of 37 per cent in profit-after-tax to Rs.4,311 crore for the fiscal ended March, 2010.

An official spokesman of the company said BHEL's focus on expansion of activities in the transportation, transmission, defence, oil and gas and other industry sectors, in addition to its core area of power, was responsible for its success during the year.

During the year, the company bagged its biggest-ever contract for establishment of a captive power plant for Indian Oil Corporation and also garnered a major repeat order from Hindalco for a 6 x 150 MW BTG package. Besides, it got the single largest order for supply of 150 units of 5,000 hp 25 kV AC mainline electric locomotives to the Indian Railways.

CHENNAI: An alumnus of the University of Madras, Rajasekar Sham, has bequeathed half of his property worth over Rs.18 crore to his alma mater.
Receiving a cheque for the final instalment of money, University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said that the amount would be allocated for the construction of student hostels on the Taramani campus and an indoor stadium in Chetpet in memory of Dr.Sham, who died in 2008.

This is the biggest donation the university has received from an individual, Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

A sum of Rs.14 crore would be used to construct boys and girls hostels for international students, research scholars and postgraduate students in Taramani. “The hostels would have 1,400 rooms to accommodate individual students and the construction is expected to be completed in two years,” he said.

With a 115 per cent increase in student intake this year, more hostel facilities were required, he added.

Dr. Sham, a former student of Medical Radiology, had contributed half of his property to the university and the remaining half to a U.S.-based charity. Thomas Osborne was selected as the administrator for the will by Dr. Sham. A law firm, Universal Legal, undertook the transactions of the amount and ensured that the university received it. As the university was not registered with the Internal Revenue Service of the U.S. as a non-profit organisation, the estate tax was 50 per cent. The firm was engaged in establishing the non-profit status of the university for special exemption from the tax.

Milestone of India - India wins this World Cup for Photography.

BANGALORE: India has bagged the World Cup in the projected images category at the Mercedes-Benz 15th FIAP Nature Biennial 2010 while Italy has won the World Cup in the printed images section. India has also secured the team gold medal in the print category, according to the results announced here on Wednesday.

India came a close second as Italy managed to whisk away the coveted Odette Bretscher Trophy by a narrow margin to emerge at the top in the overall ranking. This is the first time that India, four-time winners, is hosting the World Cup which was contended by 850 photographs and projected images from more than 570 of the world's leading nature photographers from 32 countries.

A rich haul

Indian photographers emerged on top in the individual category as well with two Indians winning medals in the print section. Kolkata-based Babi Nobis won the silver medal for capturing a leopard with the kill while Bangalorean Mandanna K.A. bagged the bronze medal for his picture of wild dogs with their prey.

The winning photographs were handpicked by an international jury comprising Jacky Martin from France, Ricardo Bussi from Italy, Jill Sneesby from South Africa and B. Srinivasa and T.N.A. Perumal from India.

The photographs were assessed based on attributes such as composition, lighting and sharpness of image. The subcategories for the projected images category were best mammal, bird, landscape, macro work and atmosphere and feeling.

Milestone of India - Brahmosthavam Special at Tirumala.

TIRUPATI: Of all the doorways inside the temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala, the ‘Kulasekhara Padi', the main threshold inside the sanctum sanctorum assumes greater significance as it is from here one can have the closest view of the presiding deity ‘Moolavirat'. The latest curtain to adorn the main threshold has an underlying message on ‘total surrender' as enshrined in scriptures.

Message-oriented

M. Subramanyam ‘aka' Mani, a local tailor who presents curtains every year to the temple as a humble offering, portrays a temple-related icon on it that conveys a message. He has taken the concept of ‘Varada Hastham' this time. ‘Varada Hastham' is the deity's right hand pointed downwards.

While deities are generally depicted as keeping the hand in ‘Abhaya Hastham' posture, indicating that the Lord will come to the rescue of the devotees, Venkateswara is different in the sense that he does not heap ‘tall assurances' of rescue!

“The hidden meaning is to convey to the devotees that the Lord will come to the rescue of only those who fall at his feet, i.e., total surrender. Now it becomes clear why the hand is pointed towards His feet”, says Mani with a grin.

Colourful

The exquisitely-designed colourful curtain with zari laces all over has the image of the ‘Varada Hastham' at the centre, apart from the ‘Namam', the Vaishnavite insignia over it. The curtain was presented to the temple authorities recently for use during the ongoing Brahmotsavams.

Milestone of India - Best Feature Film Award - ‘Pasanga' best Tamil film.

CHENNAI: Tamil film industry has retained its share of fame in the National Film Awards by bagging a couple of awards this year.

Illayaraja, who has won the award for the Best Music Director (Background Score) for the film ‘Pazhassi Raja' at the 57th National Film Award, which was announced on Wednesday, showered accolades on the film director Hariharan.

“He did not attend any award function held for him because I had not been bestowed with any award. His film came alive with interesting characterisation.”

Saying that nothing can distract him from his work, Mr. Illayaraja added “Awards come when they ought to… But my mind never gets distracted. I can think only music.”

The four-time national-award winner said the essence of music is now lost in films. “It is just not music. Technology has pervaded every department of cinema and it is nothing like old times.” Composing music, Mr.Illayaraja says, has been spontaneous for him. “If you ask me where do I begin [when composing music], I am clueless. It comes impulsively.”

‘Pasanga', a film that is already basking in glory with a bunch of awards, hogged the centre-stage once again by being adjudged the Best Tamil Film. Its producer Sasikumar said his search for a good storyline for children came to an end when he met director Pandiraj. “There are hardly any films in Tamil done for children. I wanted a story that is realistic yet entertaining. I owe this award to director and artists of the film.”

Best Child Artist award also went to the film's lead actors - Kishore and Sriram, whose performances proved to be a path-breaker in Tamil cinema. Sriram, who sounded elated, said he jumped with joy when his father called him to inform about the award. “I still can't believe I have won a national award so early in my career. I had a little hope after our film won a few awards but when it happens, it is unbelievable,” says the 14-year-old. As an added credit to the film, director Pandiraj has won the Best Screenplay (Dialogue) award.

Milestone of India - Best Feature Film Award.

NEW DELHI: Kutty Srank, a Malayalam drama starring Mammooty, expressing the different perspectives of three women about the man in their lives, was the biggest winner at the National Film Awards for 2009, sweeping the best feature film award as well as four other categories.

It led a crop of Malayalam films snapping at the heels of the Bollywood pack, which still took the highest number of feature film awards, with 15 awards being given to Hindi films. That included the best popular film 3 Idiots, the best film on national integration Delhi-6, best film on social issues Well Done Abba and the best debut film Lahore.

Silver screen superstar Amitabh Bachchan snagged most of the attention at the announcement of the Awards by the jury here on Wednesday, when he bagged his third award for best actor, this time for his role as a dying 13-year old in Paa. “To portray the role of Auro was not an easy thing,” said jury chair Ramesh Sippy, adding that it was a near-unanimous choice.

The best actress award went to Ananya Chatterjee for her role in the Bengali film Abohoman, which also won the best direction prize for Rituparna Ghosh.

The best film award in the non-feature category was shared by The Postman and Bilal.

Malayalam films managed to pick up 10 awards in the feature categories, with Oscar winner Resul Pookutty winning an award for best audiography in Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. Music director Ilayaraja bagged the best background score award for the same film. The only Tamil film to capture the spotlight was Pasanga, which bagged awards for its child actors and screenplay dialogues, as well as in its own language category.

The award announcements were slightly marred by the number of times that Mr. Sippy apologetically stumbled over the pronunciation of names in non-Hindi languages. The Awards returned to a two-tier format this year, regional juries making a shortlist considered by a central team. The “recall” clause, which allowed the final jury to consider films left out by the lower tier also came into play with the Marathi Natarang and the Bengali Houseful picking up awards.

Mr. Sippy's team will also be submitting their recommendations for improvement of the awards to the government, including the suggestion that the prize money — currently ranging between Rs. 2.5 lakh and Rs. 50,000 — be increased.
