Milestone - Rare Heart Surgery performed on New-Born. (Andhra Pradesh - India).

VISAKHAPATNAM: Doctors from Apollo Hospitals in the city have performed a rare heart surgery on a fortnight-old infant.

The boy, who was given birth by Chinamma, 25, wife of J. Krishna, an auto driver from Nidogullu of Seethanagaram mandal in Vizianagaram district, is now in the ICU and recovering fast under the round-the-clock supervision of doctors and para-medical staff.

A white card-holder, Krishna, said he was happy that just because of Rajiv Arogyasri scheme and timely help by the officials and doctors, his son's life could be saved.

The boy was referred to Apollo when he was 10 days old with symptoms of severe conditions of `blue baby.' On the advice of a doctor at Parvathipuram, he was brought to the city.

During the investigations, it was confirmed that he had interchange in connection of the great arteries to the heart leading to impure blood being pumped into the body including the brain. The condition is called `trans position of great arteries.' It occurs one in 3,000 births and accounts for seven to eight per cent of all congenital heart diseases.

The team at Apollo was headed by Chief Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon Dr. P.V. Naresh Kumar, Chief Anaesthesiologist Dr. Ramesh Babu and included Dr. Prabhakar Reddy, Dr. Ram Mohan, Dr. Patrudu, Dr. Kanna and Eswarudu. Senior paediatrician Dr. R.A. Naidu was involved in the management of the child.

Dr. Naresh Kumar said the surgery called arterial switch operation was very complicated. The child had another variation – single coronary artery. The operation lasted four to five hours and he was taken out of ventilator on Wednesday.
