CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday launched the ‘Palli Sirar Kannoli Kappom Thittam' under which free corrective spectacles are provided to school students.
At the Secretariat, he handed over spectacles to 20 students. The scheme would cover students of government and government-aided schools, besides schools of local bodies.
In the limits of the Chennai Corporation, 5,186 students would be covered initially and the cost would be Rs.20 lakh, according to an official release.
A total of 1,00,412 students studying in classes 6, 7 and 8 of government and government-aided schools and Chennai Schools in Chennai Corporation limits had been screened for refractive errors and 9,500 were found requiring corrective glasses.
Mr.Karunanidhi also presented to Mayor M. Subramanian the keys of a specially designed bus for students of a school for children with muscular dystrophy being run by Chennai Corporation. The bus, costing Rs.17 lakh, has been donated by Thai Navaneetham Kuppusamy Trust and Sri Jaya Educational Trust.
Municipal Administration and Water Supply Principal Secretary K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty and Chennai Corporation Joint Commissioner Works Ashish Chatterjee were among those present.
