Milestone of India - Rare knee surgery performed at GGH. (Andhrapradesh - India.)

KURNOOL: The orthopedic wing of Government General Hospital here successfully undertook anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery on a patient with seriously damaged knee.'

Dr. G. Raghunandan, who along with his colleague Dr. Rajaiah performed the surgery, explained that the rare surgery was possible with the availability of orthoscopy in the hospital last month.

According to Dr. Raghunandan, who underwent training in the knee replacement 2006, the equipment helped perform surgery without major opening and the patient recovered in 12 days.

The operation was conducted on Mallaiah of Bijinevemula who suffered a knee injury ten months ago and had unstable knee since then.

The replacement of torn ligament helped the patient regain the essential functions of a knee.
According to Dr. Raghunandan, the procedure cost around Rs. 40,000 in corporate hospitals, which was done by experts from Hyderabad.

Arogyasri

However, the general hospital brought the rare surgery to the doorstep of the poor for free under the Arogyasri scheme.

Hospital Superintendent G. Ramprasad appreciated the team for the surgery.
