Milestone of India - Commonwealth Games - Geeta makes a mark in wrestling.

NEW DELHI: India's Geeta won the gold in the 55kg freestyle category in the newly introduced women's wrestling discipline in the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday. The host added three more gold medals to its tally.

“This gold is the result of two years of training,” the Haryana girl said after beating Emily Bensted of Australia in the final at the Indira Gandhi Stadium.

On a day when Ashish Kumar won the country's first gymnastics medal in the history of the Games, a bronze in the men's floor exercise, the shooters continued their domination, adding two gold medals in the men's pairs events, in rapid fire pistol and air pistol, through Vijay Kumar, Omkar Singh and Gurpreet Singh.

India won a fighting silver through world record-holder Ronjan Sodhi in the double trap event. There was a notable silver for the men archers in the compound section when they shocked South Africa before losing 229-231 to England.

India's tally now stands at 14 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze.
