GAYA: Myanmar military ruler General Than Shwe on Monday donated $11,282 and Rs 6,000 to Mahabodhi Temple fund for the shrine's maintenance and development.
The general, who heads the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, made the donation after offering prayers in two separate sessions on Monday morning.
General Shwe, heading a 77-member Myanmarese delegation, was on a two-day pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya, the seat of Buddha's enlightenment.
During his stay in Bodh Gaya, General Shwe also visited his country's monastery, one of the oldest monasteries of Bodh Gaya located on the western side of Falgu river.
According to Rai Madan Kishor, the designated protocol officer for the visiting head of state, the Myanmar ruler left for Varanasi by a special plane on Monday afternoon.
