TIRUVARUR: Amidst recitations of Thyagesa and Aroora, thousands of devotees pulled the car of Sri Thyagrajaswamy temple here on Friday. Considered to be the biggest in the State, the car weighs 300 tonnes with a height of 90 feet. Bulldozers were pressed into service to push the car .
New concrete roads laid at a cost of Rs.5.6 crore helped in the smooth and quick movement of the car.
K. R. Periya Karuppan, HR and CE Minister, U. Mathivaanan, Dairy Development Minister, P. R. Sampath, HR and CE commissioner, V. K. Subburaj, Secretary, Health, Government of Tamil Nadu, A. K. S. Vijayan, Nagapattinam MP, M. Thangavel, District Revenue Officer, Praveen Kumar Abhinabu, Superintendent of Police, K. Thennan, Tiruvarur Municipal Chairman and Durga Stalin, wife of Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin participated in the festival .
Later speaking to reporters, the HR and CE minister said the car would be renovated at a cost of Rs. 2 crore after the festival. He said in the last four years, kumbabishekam had been performed at 4,500 temples in the State at Rs. 430 crore. Steps had been taken to renovate another 900 tanks. Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi had made efforts to revive the car festival after a gap of 22 years in 1970 and it had been going on since then, the minister said.
The temple town of Tiruvarur wore a festive look and elaborate security arrangements have been put in place.
Besides, additional buses were operated by the Transport Corporation.
